Untethered Hopping Robots

This One-Legged Robot Was Constructed By Disney Research

Disney Research, an international network of labs and research facilities designed to pursue high-tech media and entertainment solutions, has developed an extraordinary hopping robot that is innovative in that it can balance and move on just one leg, all within the context of a fully untethered setup.

This particular hopping robot isn't the first per se, but it is the first that doesn't require external power or indeed a tether system, thanks to its unique use of compression springs to balance the sole leg and keep it under control.

It's beyond question that this hopping robot is cool to look at, but it's also an important innovation in that could be used for testing more complicated robotic designs and applications.
