British architect Guy Hollaway designed the 'Pobble House,' a home on Dungeness beach, Britain's only classified desert. The home's title comes from the Kentish word for "pebble."
Hollaway clad the remote holiday home in steel mesh, larch and cement fiberboard. The materials were chosen, in part, to correspond to the home's setting. Hollaway explains, "The building is extremely durable, an important aspect considering the harsh climate and exposed setting. The exposure will cause the larch and Corten to weather silver and red respectively –- an echo to the natural landscape."
The architect raised the building's base by half a meter, in order to keep its impact on the shingle minimal. This move allows for a private deck, perfect for outdoor dining, on the southern end of the home.
