Bloem and Lemstra Architects designed the 'Holiday House,' a compact getaway located on the Dutch island of Vlielamd.
The design objective was to create a small, lightweight house that offered significant views of the island. The architects responded to this objective by developing a simple concept: place the rooms which require the most light (living area, kitchen) on the north side. To encourage a connection with nature, the living area can be completely opened up by a set of folding doors. Meanwhile, the bedrooms and bathrooms, which required less light and openness, were relegated to the south side.
The biggest challenge was creating a house that felt spacious, despite being limited to 600-square-feet, but Bloem and Lemstra Architects certainly accomplished it.
