For the construction of this Himalayan hotel, Sri Lanka-based practice Zowa Architects focused on durability, sustainability and view optimization. Situated in the village of Kasar Devi in Uttarakhand, India, the boutique hotel enjoys an abundance of breathtaking panoramic views from 1,600 meters above sea level.
Zowa Architects brought up the value of the Himalayan hotel, which is dubbed 'The Kumoan,' with fully glazed facades. The base is created with quarried stone and the walls are made from ash-based bricks. The Himalayan hotel's exterior is partially covered with bamboo sticks. The choice of materials was informed by the surrounding landscape, as Zowa Architects focused on locally sourcing the materials. In addition, the choice of bamboo cladding seriously lowers the industrial impact the Kumoan may have on the region.
