3D-Printed Crab Shells

These Beautiful and Intricate Hermit Crab Shelters are Made of Plastic

Tokyo-based artist Aki Inomata's unique and ingenious project involves constructing intricate, swanky shelters... for hermit crabs. Hermit crabs are known to wander from shelter to shelter, hence their names. Inomata's series 'Why Not Hand Over a 'Shelter' to Hermit Crabs?' aims to give the hardworking crustaceans a well-deserved upgrade by giving them crystal-like dwellings made using a 3D printer.

Inomata first made 3D models of snail shells, before adding iconic architectural features and landscapes on top. The scenes carved onto the shells include the Manhattan skylines, the windmills of the Netherlands and the Greek island of Santorini. She then left the shells for hermit crabs to occupy if they so desired.

The project was inspired by the modern-day negotiation of the land of the former French Embassy in Japan, whose control peacefully changes hands between France and Japan every 50 years.
