Body-Loving Designer Exhibits

The Alaïa. Azzedine Alaïa in the 21st Century Exhibition

From December 11, 2011 to May 6, 2012, the Groninger Museum, located in the Netherlands, will be hosting an exhibit titled Alaïa. Azzedine Alaïa in the 21st Century. This exhibition represents the sequel to the designer's 1997-1998 exhibition, which was also held at the Groninger Museum.

Azzedine Alaïa is often considered one of the most important clothing designers in the world within the past decade. One of the most fascinating things about this exhibition is its format; the exhibition is sectioned off into individual rooms, each focusing on a specific material employed in Azzedine’s magnificently crafted designs. Alaïa’s materials of choice range from leather, velvet, wool, chiffon and various knitwears as well as a multitude of other materials. The designs featured in this exhibit consist of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring of his creations within the last decade.

Alaïa’s creations emphasize the beauty of the healthy female body and deemphasize the emaciated body. Not only are these clothes beautiful, but they also make a point to encourage positive body image. With Azzedine’s creations, one does not have to sacrifice comfort for glamor or, more importantly, self-confidence for sex appeal.
