Google quietly announced that they’d be making access to their Google Voice service by invite only. Almost immediately, a slow rumble went through the Twittersphere as the haves quickly distinguished themselves from the have-nots.
As we reported in June, Google Voice is a service that gives you one telephone number that can be used for several phones—like your office phone, home phone and cell phone, for example. It also transcribes voicemail messages into text, sending them to you via text message or e-mail. At this time, Google Voice is invite-only.
What we didn’t mention is that Google Voice can essentially be used as a digital secretary. You can program Google Voice to send calls from your friends directly to your mobile phone, calls from important family members to all of your listed phone numbers simultaneously, or send calls from certain numbers directly to voicemail.
