Glow-In-The-Dark Roads (UPDATE)

Luminous Road Paint Makes Driving in the Netherlands Much Safer

For many years, the innovative glow-in-the-dark road design from Heijmans Infrastructure and Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde was unfortunately just a concept. But now, 500 meters of the Glowing Road has been just installed and lit up for the first time on highway N329, close to the city of Oss in the Netherlands, where there are more of these roads to come in the future.

Lines of the Glowing Road are made with a special paint that was developed by Heijmans, which absorbs daylight and then is capable of emitting a highly visible, greenish glow for up to eight hours in the dark. Improving visibility is part of what will make the roads a safer place and it's no wonder that the road lighting system is an INDEX: Award 2013 winner.
