Ethereal Self Portraits Of An Imaginary Hollywood

Artist Kalliope Amorphous has created a series of ethereal self portraits titled ‘Saint Celluloid.’ These portraits are a surreal homage to the early days of Hollywood.

The haunting experimental photographs are reminiscent of black and white press photos and publicity stills from the the golden age of cinema, but the movement and texture of the photographs is both beautiful and eerie. Amorphous says of the series: "These images portray the iconic film star archetype as fleeting ghosts trapped within a screen and glimpsed as passing phantoms."

The cinematic feel to these self-portraits is due in part to the artist’s process. She creates the effects for these ethereal images by making several short moving self-portraits on video and looping them on a movie screen. She then manipulates fabrics across the screen while capturing still images in long exposure.

In this unique series, Amorphous gives the viewer a glimpse into an imaginary theater where the ghosts of early Hollywood play.
