Hybrid Radio Wifi

The Wi-FM System Uses Frequency Modulation (FM) for Better Wifi Performance

Research coming out of Northwestern University suggests that using frequency modulation (local FM radio stations), you can get better wifi. Aleksandar Kuzmanovic from the McCormick School of Engineering has discovered a system that cancels out competing wifi signals. Wi-FM enables unconnected wifi signals that are nearby to communicate to each other via ambient frequency modulation signals.

By monitoring the area, the system can determine internet usage patterns of other networks and send them information through FM radio stations. Then it will know to send information when the signals are at their least busy, or quietest.

Given many internet-connected devices already come equipped with FM chips, this gives this technology tremendous potential when it comes to solving slow and fluctuating signals.
