This Francesco Sambo Series is Eery and Unsettling

For many people, circuses are not carnivals of fancy and amusement but rather bizarre, creepy places and this recent Francesco Sambo series reflects that.

The monochromatic series, titled simply ‘Circus,’ ranges from eerie to macabre. Whether it is a woman with rabbit ears clutching herself or a baby with uncharacteristically large brow-ridges making a pouting expression with its lips while staring coldly at the viewer from behind a thin veil of mist, these images are sure to linger in many viewers’ minds.

Horror is a genre that can be difficult to pull off. When it is not done well, the results are usually corny and amusing instead of scary or unsettling. In this Circus series, however, Sambo has most definitely portrayed horror effectively.
