Reconstructed Monastery Museums

This Italian Gallery is Located Inside of a Former Monastery

Austrian architect Heinz Tesar recently teamed up with the Italian firm 'Studio Mas' to convert a former monastery into a contemporary art gallery. In many cities around the world, architects are struggling with how to refurbish historic buildings without compromising the original design. This Italian gallery demonstrates how architects can preserve historic buildings in a beautiful and functional way.

The 'Museo Bailo' is housed inside of a former monastery in the city of Treviso, Italy. The building was severally damaged during World War Two, leaving it in desperate need of a renovation. Tesar and his team managed to update the old building without compromising its original character. The new structure is wrapped in 'Marmorino' plaster, which is comprised of Carrara marble and white cement. The building also features a cruciform facade that honors the structure's religious past. Despite the fresh exterior, the designer maintained the shape of the original structure.

The Museo Bailo now boasts a freshly renovated facade that appears to be modern and historical.
