Michal Giedrojc's Folk Monidlo Series is Based Around the Bridegroom

The Folk Monidlo photo series is based around realistic paintings of bridegrooms in the Polish culture back in the 19th century. Although these paintings were inspired by actual photographic portraits of these bridegrooms, this photo series is the opposite in the sense that they are photographs inspired by paintings.

Shot by Slupsk-based photographer Michal Giedrojc, the Folk Monidlo photo series has a dark and rather depressing air about it. Of course, considering that smiling was not the thing back in the day, I shouldn't be surprised at the somber mood each image portrays.

Yet the Folk Monidlo photo series also has a surreal quality that is grounded in the fact that it is the same man in each of these Polish costumes (including the lady garments).
