Fraunhofer's Flying Robots Will Simplify Inventory Administration

The Fraunhofer Institute's InventAIRy Project is looking to develop flying robots that can carry out the mind-numbing and time-consuming task of keeping tabs on warehouse stock, while also helping to keep records and generally streamline warehouse operations. The robots could help make inventories less labor-intensive and time-consuming.

The flying robots are able to stay in fixed positions using GPS and motion sensors, while their cameras map and navigate the warehouse. The underlying system is designed to work smoothly with database inventory architecture, while the ability of the robots to fly makes it easy for them to hunt for items hidden at the back of high shelves.

The researchers behind the project hope to initiate partially automated flights using their flying inventory robots in mid-2015. The long-term goal is to implement a fully autonomous robot that can take over the most tedious tasks from humans.
