Wave Power-Harnessing Trawlers

This Old Fishing Trawler Now Harvests Wave Power

An old Norwegian fishing trawler has been given a new lease of life as a wave power-harnessing power plant. Anchored off-shore in the Stadthavet region, this trawler is part of a broader effort to convert large, purpose-built vessels into wave power harnessing monsters.

The vessel makes use of an existing system dubbed the 'fluctuating water column'. This system utilizes four vertical chambers installed in a bow, which surrounding sea water can flow into and out of. Each of these chambers is capped by a turbine situated on the deck of the boat.

As waves collide with the vessel, they flow up into the chambers, causing water levels to rise. This increases air pressure in the upper section of the chamber, driving the turbine and generating electricity.

This is a fantastic example of how old and seemingly useless things can be repurposed and given a new lease of life, in this case as eco-friendly power generators.
