Fish-Harvesting Underwater Robots

This Underwater Robot Hunts Down Invasive Lionfish

A group of student innovators working out of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute over in Massachusetts developed a high-tech underwater robot that is designed to be able to counter the threat posed by the invasive Lionfish species off the southern and eastern coasts of the United States.

The Lionfish has posed a problem to ecosystems due to the fact that it has no natural predators, lays tens of thousands of fish itself and consumes a high amount of prey. It is also difficult for divers to hunt, which is where the underwater robot comes in.

This robot makes use of artificial intelligence technologies to autonomously detect, track and kill Lionfish using a spear module. Once the fish is killed, the robot can transfer it to the surface.

Efficient and easy to deploy, this underwater robot is a fine example of the utility of robotic technologies in controlling invasive wildlife species.
