The Mother's Milk Messaging App Supports First-Time Mothers

A researcher from the University of Colorado School of Medicine recently conducted a study that used a mobile app to provide community support for first-time mothers. While there are a number of apps that help women deal with the technical side of breastfeeding, this app was developed to provide new moms with social media support for overcoming breastfeeding issues.

The 'Mother's Milk Messaging' app was developed by Dr. Maya Bunik with help from colleagues in the mHealth Impact Laboratory at the Colorado School of Public Health. In the study, the app was used to provide first-time mothers with push notifications outlining the benefits of breastfeeding. The app also linked women back to a private Facebook page, where they could access a supportive online community. The study showed that the app encouraged more women to breastfeed and gave new moms greater confidence when it came to coping with breastfeeding issues.

The study and app demonstrate the value of online communities when it comes to helping women cope with the challenges of breastfeeding.
