Flame-Extinguishing Robots

The 'Fire-Fighting SAFFiR' is Wide-Eyed and Ready for Action

The 'Fire-Fighting SAFFiR' was built by the Naval Research Laboratory because, even during times of peace, fire is still a threat. Complete with wheels that allow mobility and a human-like face, this robot named 'Octavia' can receive instructions from the human voice and gestures.

Using certain arm movements and specific instructions as to where the fire is, such as "the fire is in the center on the floor," Octavia can respond and take action to put out the flames. The robot then enters the room and uses cameras to locate the fire. After the fire has been targeted, Octavia hoses it down with compressed air and water, which come from its backpack.

The Naval Research Laboratory is currently looking to improve this fire-fighting robot by making its interactions with humans more natural.
