iPod Vending in Department Stores

eSpot at Macy's

After seeing the success of iPod vending machines at various international airports and hotels, Macy's will add them to around 400 department store locations.

The self-serve Zoom Systems, to be called e-Spots, will be stacked with technology and gadgets. They were supposed to be installed by fall 2006, at which point they were being promoted under the name, Zoom @ Macy's, but it's taken until now to get things rolling.

"The new e-Spot automated shops offer the latest consumer electronics at a customer's fingertips with touchscreen technology that processes the transaction and completes the sale in a matter of minutes," KioskMarketPlace.com explains. "The machines will offer widely demanded brands including Apple, Sony, Canon and MyVu."

It makes sense to have these at airports where people may buy new music players out of desperation to fight flight boredom, scoop up headphones because they find airline headsets unsatisfactory, or pick up a digital camera to replace the one they forgot in their packing rush.

But does it make sense for Macy's? The department store argues that people want one-stop shopping that is fast and offers instant gratification without interacting with salespeople or dealing with shipping time associated with online shopping.

Product the e-Spots offer range from $14.99 to $349.99:

iPod Touch, Classic, Nano and Shuffle
Canon 7MP and 8MP digital cameras
Samsung 7MP digital camera and 1GB Camcorder
MyVu Personal Media Viewers
Sony, V-MODA
Bang and Olufsen headphones
Harman Kardon headphones
Belkin mobile accessories
