Nature-Inspired Writer Workspaces

Erin Moore Builds a Remote Writer Shed for Her Writer Mother

Surely nothing is more inspiring than having Oregon-based architect and university professor Erin Moore build a writing studio for her mother Kathleen Dean Moore, also a professor and nature writer. The 'Watershed' was built from a need -- a need "to write and observe the delicate wetland ecosystem on the banks of the Mary's River in Oregon." The Watershed is a welcome retreat from the modern day as all of Moore's writing is done by hand; computers aren't allowed!

The beautiful red cedar writing studio has a fabricated steel black frame with glass windows and concrete. The modern wooden cabin is stylish as it is functional -- just what Kathleen wanted. The result is a welcoming solitary retreat and more importantly, it is completely off the grid.

On the intention of the shed, Kathleen says, "[t]he goal was to figure out how to live on the land without spoiling it," Kathleen told Dwell. "I find myself writing more and more about silence out here. I find myself wanting to tell stories about how wild places can comfort us."
