Talented artist Cayce Zavaglia recreates people's faces using string to in this series of embroidery portraits. Though the illustrations are made of thread they capture the shading, realism and color of skin so beautifully the viewer has to look back a few times to really see that these portraits aren't done with paint.
While creating a portrait is no easy feat, using string to capture the human visage truly tests an artist's skill as everything must be done in single stitches and without traditional blending techniques. Instead to create shadow, depth and blurred color Zavaglia opts for a cross-stitching method that overlaps various hues of string to create a unified design that from afar looks incredibly realistic. Up close the viewer can see the stitching that has a Vincent Van Gogh-like style.
