Green Diesel Aircraft

The Boeing ecoDemonstrator 878 is Powered By Eco-Friendly Diesel

The ecoDemonstrator 787 is a test airplane that uses an eco-friendly mix of jet fuel and so-called 'green diesel,' which comprises vegetable oils, waste cooking oil and waste animal fats.

The ecoDemonstrator 787 aircraft that Boeing used for the first test flight had a left engine that was powered by a blend of 85% petroleum jet fuel and 15% green diesel. "The airplane performed as designed with the green diesel blend, just as it does with conventional jet fuel," said Captain Mike Carriker of Being. "This is exactly what we want to see in flight tests with a new type of fuel."

The green diesel was supplied by Finland's Neste Oil, which says that such sustainably produced green diesel produces 50% to 90% less carbon emissions than traditional diesel.
