Conceptual Commuter Gondolas

The Proposed East River Skyway Will Alleviate Overcrowded NYC Transit

Could the East River Skyway offer a sustainable solution to subway crowding in New York City? Daniel Levy certainly thinks so. The CityRealty President wants to develop a cable car network over the East River to address issues of over-crowding with the Metropolitan Transit Authority and population booms in the area. The proposal for a high-speed gondola aims to help commuters in Brooklyn and Manhattan by cutting down their travel time by up to 30 minutes.

While the East River Skyway is still in the conceptual phase, other cities with large populations and overly busy transit systems have successfully integrated gondolas. In 2011 Rio de Janeiro added gondolas to its existing transportation network. Kirkland, Washington and Georgetown (a neighborhood in Washington DC) are also considering commuter gondolas.
