Google created a new earthquake detection system that will be released in California. The earthquake detection system functions by using Android smartphones as a seismometer in order to create a detection network. Data collected by smartphones can also be used for Google's search engine to inform users if an earthquake has occurred. Android smartphones can detected seismic activity using accelerometers, which are able to track P-waves that occur before an earthquake. Each time a device detects P-waves, the information is sent to a central server. Following this, the server will evaluate if an earthquake is likely to occur.
