Biometric Earphone Security

This Prototypical Ear Device Provides Hands-Free Authentication

This fraud-preventing ear device is equipped with authentication technology so your smartphone won't leak confidential information such as passwords. Developed by the NEC Corporation in Japan, the earphone gadget seeks to ensure secure and safe computing.

The ear pieces are outfitted with otoacoustic authentication capabilities. This technology allows them to recognize aspects of the wearer's ear to provide hands-free validation, or the ability to activate computers or similar devices without the distraction of having to type in passwords or throw down a thumb print. The ear device prototype also has a motion sensor, which detects the wearer's location, even indoors where GPS signals can falter.

The NEC developed this additional layer of biometric security in an effort to prevent smartphone-related security leaks, including in public spaces.
