American artist Douglas Smith recently completed a series of paintings aptly titled 'Adventure' that convey vivid scenes of voyage, conflict and discovery.
One drawing depicts gentry riding atop an elephant through the streets of British India; another portrays a man flying above skyscrapers on the back of a giant eagle. In one illustration, an 18th-century French cavalry officer rallies his troops in advance of leading a fearsome charge at the enemy. Other scenes are less violent.
Reminiscent of a Jules Verne novel, Smith's work portrays an astronaut staring through his helmet at a foliage-filled bio-dome in one picture. Such imagery naturally piques one's curiosity and ignites the imagination.
Despite the wildly varying scenery, all of the drawings in this series portray scenes of adventure and voyage.
