Disordered Identity Photography

This Photo Series Examines Dissociative Identity Disorder

For her latest series 'My Girls,' photographer Laurence Philomene turns her lens on her girlfriend Luna e Los Santos, a woman living with Dissociative Identity Disorder.

The disorder, which is the result of prolonged trauma or abuse, has been continuously misunderstood and contested. The affected individual develops one or more personalities to help them cope with traumatic memories. Philomene explains, "Every day is different, and for me it’s about always acknowledging whichever alter is out, treating them with love [and] respect and growing together." In response to the stigma, Los Santos explains that DID saved her life, it is the reason she has and continues to survive.

The series captures fragments of Los Santos' body, from her soft breasts to her pierced nose. Within the safety of the domestic realm, Philomene is able to explore and weave the threads that make up Los Santos' "whole:" her dreams, fears, comforts.
