Subversive Disney Illustrations

These Redesigned Disney Images Push the Pop Culture Envelope

José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros gives these iconic Disney images and characters a subversive pop culture makeover for a gallery exhibition in Los Angeles. The images depict various Disney characters engaging in profane and provocative activities that many of us have never imagined we'd see them do.

Ontiveros' art show, fittingly titled 'Profanity Pop,' gives the classical and traditional look of Disney a contemporary makeover. In doing so Ontiveros incorporates themes like weight struggles, drug use, heavy drinking and even gay marriage into his illustrations through well-known disney characters. One image shows Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid and Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty sharing their wedding vows. Another illustration shows Snow White taking a selfie with a dramatic weight gain.

While the images are extremely provocative, it's refreshing to see this static characters redesigned and breaking down binaries for a modern day audience.
