The Dingli Sculpture Art Museum was erected in Quanzhou, China, where the ancient city of Chongwu was built in 1387. With a long history of stone carving in this Fujian area and an existing building that was not adequate for the appropriate storage and presentation of a great collection of creative works, the ATR Atelier devised a new edifice that would do well to represent the mighty media inside.
Local stone was quarried and used to construct modules that resemble enormous beveled bricks. These make up the rhythmic facades of the Dingli Sculpture Art Museum, arranged with narrow separations for the insertion of windows and the expression of fantastic shadows. With the boulder-like elements protruding from the frame of the building, the structure looks overpowering and impressive and magnificent.
