Diane Victor is a renowned artist who specializes in drawing and etching. Being a self-confessed mute, she lacks talent vocally, but throughout the years, she has made up for it visually through her unique and motivated works of art.
One of her most famous series of works consists of these unique smoke-styled paintings. The paintings are created using the carbon that is emitted from candle smoke on white paper. The subjects in the artworks were patients in the St Raphael HIV/Aids Center Day Clinic in Grahamstown, South Africa that she photographed in 2004.
The series includes 36 portraits, all created through this carbon smoke technique. Diane Victor relates the impermanent medium of smoke to these patients because of their fragile health state.
