Poignant Skin Photos

These Photos Show Patterns Created by a Dermatographia Patient on Her Skin

Brooklyn-based photographer Ariana Page Russell has a condition called dermatographia which makes her skin hypersensitive to touch, enabling her to lightly touch and scratch her flesh to create patterns of raised welts. For this photo series, Russell manipulated her skin to create deliberate, elegant patterns.

Whereas the markers of human touch leave most people's skins after moments, they are preserved for longer periods -- as much as 30 minutes -- on Russell's skin because of her dermatographia. Now, she is preserving these moments twice over by taking photographs of intricate patterns created on her skin.

The photographs show highly detailed and mesmeric patterns created by Russell on her own skin. Russell says the photo series make her think about the temporary nature of existence, and how things change over the course of time.
