Nick Brennan made a device called Sound Pegs that turns anything into homemade musical instruments. The device consists of large wooden pegs that are attached to a converter and speakers. The converter changes the vibrations from whatever the pegs are attached to into a digital signal which can then be played back through music generating software (GarageBand, Fruity Loops etc.).

Flat objects work best but you can literally attach the Sound Pegs to anything and produce a sound with them. In the demonstration video, Nick Brennan uses books and CD cases to make a drum set. As demonstrated in the slideshow you can use anything from vinyl records, to boots, to pottery, the choices really are endless. This device could supply anyone with endless hours of fun, it also creates a new median for musicians to experiment with.
