The concept of delivery by drones has been capturing the imagination in the Western world for some time, and the approach is now infiltrating Asia. Singapore Post is currently testing the use of unmanned autonomous vehicles which would be used to ferry mail throughout the Malay archipelago.
The Malay archipelago is a very challenging environment in which to deliver mail because it is the world's largest island chain. Therefore flying parcels back and forth makes a lot of sense. The system's first test was to ship a pair of parcels from mainland Singapore to the Pulau Ubin island.
Ultimately, what Singapore is trying to do with its delivery by drones project is to make the different elements of its infrastructure ecosystem "collaborate, experiment with new ways of doing things, and in the process, literally aim for the sky with new technology," says project director Jacqueline Poh.
