David Havetta Makes Sculptures Out of Chewed-Up Nicotine Gum

David Havetta is a Slovak artist who creates sculptures out of chewed up pieces of nicotine gum. The 65-year-old Havetta originally started smoking as a boy but decided to give the habit up 25 years ago. He tried different methods of keep himself away from cigarettes until he thankfully came across nicotine gum.

He began chewing the gum and discovered one day out of boredom that a chewed up piece of nicotine gum is an incredibly good medium to sculpt with. The rest, as they say, is history. He began sculpting a woman's head with the gum and liked his work so much that he decided to create a body for it. A few months and 500 pieces of gum later, David Havetta had completed his first nicotine gum sculpture. Since then, he has completed a number of other sculptures, each consisting of thousands of pieces of gum.
