Floating Dairy Farms

The First Floating Dairy Farm Aims to Continue the Path to Self-Sufficiency

In an attempt to forge the path to self-sufficiency and innovative food production techniques, the Floating Farm in the Netherlands will be the first floating dairy farm design in the world.

The farm will house 60 dairy cows and will produce "milk, cream, cheese, butter and yogurt" -- all of which will go to local stores. The concept of the floating dairy farm came to fruition in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy when the New York area felt the consequences of food shortages. The end goal of this project is to "create cities that are completely self-sufficient" -- ones that would be floating on top of water.

The use of ocean space to create efficient systems is a clever one since water takes up the majority of the planet, and these urban dairy farms have a unique design that will help prevent future food shortages.
