PESI provides continuing education to professionals across the country and one of its events from late 2019 included the "Transgender & Gender Non-Binary (TGNB) Adult Clients: Culturally-Competent Strategies Every Clinician Should Know." Targeted at counselors, social workers, psychologists, psychotherapists, case managers, therapists, nurses, and other health/mental health professionals, this course was geared toward ensuring that transgender and non-binary folks get the care that they need and deserve. Given the clinical inexperience and stigma healthcare institutions are still facing when serving this demographic, a course in culturally competent strategies is absolutely necessary.
The workshop was led by Dianne Nicolls, MS, LMFT, gender therapist who focused on creating safe and respectful environments that are built on compassion and acceptance. She shared 15 years of clinical experience, along with a uniquely personal story.
