Collision-Predicting Systems

This Microsoft Project Analyzes Traffic Cameras to Prevent Accidents

Rather than relying on the automotive industry to introduce better collision prevention systems, planners from the City of Bellvue and engineers from Microsoft are coming together to make roads a safer place, using what is already available to them.

The initiative makes use of traffic cameras that are already installed, but are typically only used by traffic officials and police officers. Now, the teams at Microsoft are developing technology to analyze footage captured by the cameras and identify where accidents are likely to happen at the most dangerous intersections.

The transportation system is being likened to the movie Minority Report, where Tom Cruise's character stops crime before it happens. Victor Bahl of Microsoft Research’s Mobility and Networking Research says that "creating a next-generation traffic management system" will help to address problems in both safety and infrastructure.
