Humanizing Cloud Photography

A Photo Collection Called 'Cloud Face' Has Faces Staring Down at You

In a series of artworks by the art group Shinseungback Kimyonghun called 'Cloud Face,' images of faces seen in the sky are taken. Using face detection algorithms, the artists found faces in the sky after directing their cameras upwards. As a result, the group created a series of pictures with awe-inspiring faces staring down at you from the sky.

The algorithm works by looking at the image data that it's receiving and stopping at a frame when it thinks it has found a face. The team then took each frozen frame and compiled it into their final product.

The goal of the Cloud Face project was to highlight the differences between human and computer facial recognition. While you may be able to see the faces in most of the pictures, some are just nonsensical. That difference is exactly what Shinseungback Kimyonghun was trying to demonstrate.
