This Japanese Holiday Home Was Specifically Designed for a Hilly Site

Japanese studio Double Negatives Architecture adapted to a difficult woodland site when creating this concrete and chipboard home in the forest of Japan's Nagano Prefecture.

The landscape provided many hardships for the architects; namely, the hilly topography and diminished lighting. To combat these problems, the architects began with MAS, a multi-agent system, to map out the surroundings and plan their design. As such, their design takes far more care and consideration of the site than most; you could say, even, that the home was custom-built to make the most out of a tricky location.

The architects used sheets of oriented strand board to redirect sunlight away from the windows. Another feature, the home's sloping roof, was specifically designed on the angle that best protects the rest of the home from strong winds coming in from the west.
