IGArchitects Designs the Check Patterned House in Japan

Local design studio IGArchitets completes the Check Patterned House located in Saitama, Japan. It is defined by large clear windows that are inspired by the look of traditional lanterns, which is a great contrast to the concrete build of the home's structure. It is home to a family of three and the design planning process highlights the two large concrete blocks. Due to the wrapped clear glazing, it has a bright light that enters the home without compromising any privacy. At night, the glow that comes from the inside evokes a lantern-like visual.

Founder of IGArchitects, Masato Igarashi tells Dezeen, "Since the site is a prominent corner lot, we thought of a heroic way to build it that would be appropriate for the site. As it would be costly to build a foundation for the entire building, two concrete blocks were erected like columns, and slabs were cantilevered from these concrete blocks without foundations. These wall pillars enclose private functions which don't require big windows, such as entrance, bathroom, toilet, storage, and pipe space."
