This App Uses AI to Help Preserve the Blackfoot Language

The Blackfoot language has been spoken by Indigenous communities in the northwest regions of North America since time immemorial but has lately been deemed to be on the verge of extinction, something that a new chatbot platform is looking to combat.

Developed by the Blackfoot Revitalization Project, this chatbot platform essentially allows users to translate words from English to Blackfoot, using pictorial aids and visual representation to aid in learning. Using AI and machine learning, this web-based platform provides both text-based translation as well as audio pronunciation guides, allowing users to improve their knowledge of the Blackfoot language in a holistic manner.

Developed by the the Peigan Board of Education in Canada's Alberta province as part of a collaboration with the departments of computing science and Indigenous studies at Simon Fraser University, this chatbot platform is an exemplar of the utility of modern technologies in helping to preserve age-old cultural knowledge and practices.
