This Project Aims to Turn an Old Church into a Ceramics Workshop

Artist Caledonia Curry, also known as 'SWOON,' recently launched a campaign to turn an abandoned church into an art center and ceramics workshop. Like many former mining towns, Braddock, Pennsylvania, has struggled with poverty and economic decline. This organization is on a mission to attract young creatives to the Braddock by designing a collaborative workspace.

'Braddock Tiles' is a project launched by SWOON's 'Heliotrope Foundation.' The project aims to turn an abandoned church into a thriving art center and ceramics workshop. In order to complete the project, the organization is trying to raise enough money to hire local residents to make the tiles needed to weather-proof the building's roof. The 20,000 tiles will not only serve a practical purpose, but they will also help revamp the town. As SWOON explains, "Our goal is to reopen this building as a living work of art that is in service to its neighborhood."

The project demonstrates how artistic initiatives can help breathe new life into struggling communities.
