Julianne Hough took the prize for worst celebrity costume this Halloween when she dressed up as a character from hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black. Hough darkened her skin to better portray the African-American inmate she was going as. The practice is referred to as blackface, a form of stage makeup used in Vaudeville and minstrel shows. Nowadays, blackface is widely regarded as a racist and culturally appropriative no-no and Hough was put on blast for incorporating it into her costume.
In order to mitigate the public outrage, Hough formally apologized, saying "I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."
Hopefully next year Hough can redeem herself with a less controversial costume.
