The South Asian country of Bhutan recently honored a royal birth with a celebratory tree-planting campaign that more than doubled the country's previous record of planting 49,672 trees in a single day.
To honor the birth of King Khesar and Queen Jetsun's first child, the country asked all 82,000 households to plant a single tree. An additional 26,000 trees were then planted by volunteers for a grand total of 108,000. This exact number was chosen because 108 is a sacred number in the Buddhist religion. Trees are also important to Buddhism, as they represent the provider and nourisher of all forms of life. As a result, each tree planted was sealed with a prayer and a wish from the person planting it that the prince will grow strong and healthy like the trees themselves.
