Cayce Zavaglia Uses a Technique She Dubs 'Modern Pointillism'

There have been some mind-boggling hyper-realistic artworks emerging on the Internet over the past few months, but Cayce Zavaglia's embroidered portraits stand out above the rest. It is one thing to draw or paint photorealistic portraits, but to stitch them brings this artistic fad to a whole new level.

Born in Valparaiso, Indiana, Cayce Zavaglia is currently based in St. Louis, Missouri. Although her main medium is now crewel embroidery wool, Cayce Zavaglia still considers herself a painter, referring to her portraits as 'paintings.' She does employ techniques she once used as a drawer and painter, yet she is currently working on a new technique that she has dubbed 'Modern Pointillism.'

Inspired by traditional tapestry art, Cayce Zavaglia has learned to create tighter, more layered sequences that give the allusion of depth, volume and form.
