High School Football Photography

Catherine Opie's 'Figure and Landscape' Exhibition

Part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) 'Manly Pursuits: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins' exhibition is photographer Catherine Opie's 'Figure and Landscape.' Her work is centered on high school football which allows her to explore themes of national identity, community and most obviously, masculinity.

Catherine Opie's work allowed her to travel to seven states in America in order to capture different teams and players.

Implications - Opie does not focus on the cliches that come with football, but rather on the diversity of the individual athletes and their communities. The many young highschool football players she photographed could very well be NFL stars in the near future! Opie has certainly captured a very interesting and heartfelt photo series.
