Caulfield Preparatory Modernizes an Old Classic

Slip into something from Vincent Flumiani’s newest menswear line, Caulfield Preparatory, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. A time when blazers, thick sweaters, and corduroy vests ruled the school uniform.

The Autumn ‘09 Caulfield Preparatory collection takes inspiration from J.D. Salinger’s ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ and aims to represent Flumiani’s own path to self-discovery. Rising out of the designer’s own writing –- a story about a young man who runs away to experience various adventures around the world –- the collection is a vintage-feel line of thick knits, woolen blazers, and worn-in tees that look old-school and preppy, but also casual and laid-back at the same time.

"I wanted to take classic, preppy clothes like the wool blazer or corduroy suit and make them more rebellious and more rumpled than the originals," says Flumiani.

Other accents include removable crest patches, plaid lining, and even pocket-sized reprints of the chapter of Flumiani’s story on which the collection is based.

"This first collection is Chapter One of my story. In Chapter Two — spring 2010 — the hero sets sail from New York and so that collection has a more nautical slant."
