The Casa Flotanta was constructed by San Jose architecture and design studio Benjamin Garcia Saxe Architecture for the Gooden-Nahome family who wanted a home that overlooks the ocean. The home is located on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, nestled in the Costa Rican forest, with unparalleled views of the ocean below.
The house was built on an environmentally conscious level; instead of getting rid of trees and parts of the land, the architects decided to lift the house up, "on a series of piloti which gives the impression that it is floating above the hillside. By doing this [they] saved the immense cost of creating soil retention walls around the site."
The entire structure is clad with wood and bamboo. The interior features vertical and horizontal bamboo linings with a terrace that meanders through the entire front of the home.
