The UK Leads the Way With Buried CO2 Project

The idea of burying captured emissions under the sea has been a pie in the sky dream--until now. In an effort to meet the 20% carbon emissions cut imposed by the government by the year 2020, the UK’s National Grid is working on a project to pipe carbon emissions into geological formations beneath the North Sea.

The National Grid operates the UK’s high-voltage electricity transmission and gas distribution networks. 60 million tons of carbon dioxide per year are emitted from power plants and other industrial sites around the region targeted for the sequestering project. Capture and storage of that carbon would beroughly equal to removing 20 million cars from the road.
