Students Build Canada's Greenest Home in Ontario

The Endeavour Centre, an Ontario-based nonprofit organization offering programs and instruction on sustainable building and design, has embarked on a new project called Canada's Greenest Home. Students from The Endeavour Centre's Sustainable New Construction certificate program will be coming together to build a 2,000 square-foot house in Peterborough, Ontario. The project will take place over a period of five months this coming summer.

As for the house's environmentally friendly elements, well, it's not called Canada's Greenest Home for nothing. Using the Living Building Challenge as a standard, the house will be built so that it meets net zero energy requirements. Further, it will be completely constructed from locally sourced and eco-friendly materials (for instance, natural paints will be used and its walls will be made from pre-fabricated straw bales), and it will collect its own water and treat its own waste.
